Liberia Listed Among MCC Candidate Countries for 2026 Compact Support as Neighbors Face Ineligibility

Liberia has been named among the 87 candidate countries submitted by the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) to the United States Congress for approval to receive compact support for fiscal year 2026. This development signals a significant opportunity for Liberia to secure critical development financing that could enhance infrastructure, energy, governance, and other priority sectors essential to driving sustainable economic growth. The announcement highlights Liberia’s progress in meeting MCC’s selection criteria, which focus on good governance, economic freedom, and investment in people.

Interestingly, while Liberia made the list, some regional counterparts were deemed ineligible due to specific governance and financial restrictions. Ghana, once considered one of the region’s strongest economic performers, was declared ineligible because of “debt default restriction in section 7012 of the FY 2025 SFOAA,” with its future eligibility pending a debt restructuring agreement. Similarly, Burkina Faso and Guinea were disqualified due to the “military coup restriction,” which bars countries with unconstitutional changes in government from accessing MCC support.

Liberia’s inclusion comes at a crucial time when the country is striving to stabilize its economy, improve service delivery, and attract foreign investment. If approved by the U.S. Congress, the compact support will provide much-needed resources to accelerate key national development priorities. Moreover, Liberia’s candidacy reflects the international community’s recognition of its democratic progress and commitment to reforms, positioning the nation as a potential beneficiary of transformative development aid while other West African neighbors grapple with economic and political challenges.
